1943년 만하임에서 출생했으며 현재 브레멘 대학에서 문화사와 민속학 교수로 재직 중이다. 저서로 『신도 아니고 주인도 아닌(Ni Dieu­ni metre)』(1974), 『꿈의 시간(Traumzeit)」(1978), 『자티리콘(Satyricon)』(1982), 『제드나 또는 인생에 대한 사랑(Sedna oder Die Liebe zum Leben)』(1984), 『문명화과정의 신화(Der Mythos vom Ziyilisationsprozeβ)』의 제1부 『나체와 수치의 역사(Nacktheit und Scham)』(1988), 제2부 『친밀감(Intimitat)』(1990), 제3부 『외설과 폭력(Obszonitat und Gewalt)』(1993) 등이 있다.
